Golden rain tree is a deciduous, single-trunk specimen with a multiple spreading branch pattern up to thirty or forty feet tall and wide. It produces a rounded canopy with dense foliage and grayish brown bark that becomes furrowed and ridged with age. When the leaves bud out in the spring, they are reddish pink and turn a deep green color, providing a delicate feathery or lacy appearance. In spring, large, airy clusters of yellow blossoms cover the entire tree. In summer, papery, greenish yellow seedpods appear that contain small, round, blackish brown soft seeds. The seedpods are extremely ornamental and resemble small Chinese lanterns over the entire tree. The leaves turn a golden yellow in winter before dropping to the ground. The golden rain tree needs full sun and reflected heat to produce flowers and seedpods. It grows best in fertile, well-draining soil, is heat- and drought-tolerant, and hardy to twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Provide deep, supplemental irrigation during the hot, dry season. This tree can reseed in other parts of the landscape and in some areas can be invasive. Its leaves and seed drop require some cleanup throughout the year. Use this exciting specimen tree in groupings to create deep shade and as a single, freestanding accent in parks, as a street tree, in medians, or around parking lots. It is native to China and Korea.
